On April 9, 2008, the Dallas City Council unanimously adopted one of the most
forward-thinking green building ordinances in the country. The new program
will require that all new construction (residential AND commercial) be energy-
and water-efficient beginning in October 2009, and be certifiable by one of
several national or regional green building standards. Although many
communities have green building programs, no other major city requires all new
construction to be resource efficient. For more information, see the City
of Dallas's Green Dallas website:

 Ed
Mazria, founder of Architecture 2030 and architect of the 2030 Challenge,
visited Dallas in April to talk about the role of architects and designers in
reducing carbon emissions by designing and retrofitting buildings in order to
reach a goal of carbon neutrality by 2030. While in town, Mazria appeared
on KERA's Think! program, lectured to 300 members of the public, conducted a
workshop for architects and visited with the Dallas Morning News and Dallas City
Councilmember Linda Koop. Our thanks to HKS, t.howard + associates,
Perkins+Will, the Beck Group, AIA Dallas, the Greater Dallas Planning Council,
the North Texas chapter of the US Green Building Council, and especially to
Betsy del Monte of Beck for her help. For more information on Mazria's
work, visit www.architecture2030.org.
